German Online Casino Guide

Online Casinos for GermansWhen you play at an online casino, you will want to play at the best one – but what is meant by ‘the best one’? The one with the best bonuses, the best games or the best levels of customer services? Perhaps a combination of all three, if such a thing exists! If you are looking for new German online casinos, your choices will be more limited than in other jurisdictions. That is because the online gambling market in Germany is a little more restrictive than in other countries. As a result, many online casinos – even the biggest and best ones – refuse to accept players based in Germany.

The one thing you must not do when you are searching for the best new German online casinos is abandon your search, and that’s because we at NewCasinos.org are here to help you! We have done all the legwork needed to find the best online casinos available to German players. Just keep reading, and you will find out all that you need to know about the new German casinos online that we consider being the best.

What is the Legal Status of German Online Casinos?

Germany has never really had a problem with gambling. The country has always had a proud athletic tradition, and the German football team has remained one of the strongest in the world since winning its first FIFA World Cup in 1954 (the country has since won the World Cup a further three times). However, the country has always had a slight problem with professional sport, preferring sporting activities on an amateur basis. There was no organised, professional football league in Germany until 1963. This is a comparison to England where organised football has been running since 1888!

Of course, where there is a sport, there is betting on sport, and if we were writing the story of gambling in Germany, our story would begin. As Germany has hardly any history of horse racing, football has attracted the most attention when it comes to gambling. The government in Germany does not have much of a problem with sports betting in Germany … as long as they are making money from it.

When it comes to casino gambling, again, Germany’s authorities do not have much of a problem with it. A great deal of the German economy relies upon tourism, and many people when they come to Germany want to be free to play casino games. Casinos are perfectly legal in Germany (as long as they pay their tax bills!) and there are around eighty or so casinos available within the country.

Legislation of Online Casinos in Germany

The first legislation that came into force in Germany that included online casinos was passed in 2008. It basically gave online gambling the thumbs down in the country … for operators at least. If you were based in Germany and began a company designed to offer online casino games to German people, you could face jail time.

For players in Germany, it was a little different. Like many other jurisdictions in the world, it is ‘technically’ illegal to gamble online. Still, if you do and you do not run down the streets screaming and shouting about it, then you are unlikely to face any prosecution.

In 2012 a new law called the ‘Interstate Treaty on Gambling’ (ISTG) was proposed and eventually came into force. This was something of a revelation (or revolution) as online sports betting was suddenly permitted … but not online casino play.

However, there were still problems. Germany is a vast country and is split into several federal states. These states were free to join the ISTG or pass their own legislation. Most states did join the ISTG but one – Schleswig Holstein – decided not to. Instead, they created their own, more liberal version of the ISTG. It permitted operators to apply for licences to permit all online gambling forms – sports betting, poker and yes, online casinos!

Do you want more problems with ISTG? Then you got them! Germany is part of the European Union and comes under EU law – and the ISTG is incompatible with EU legislation! This adds further levels of cloudiness about online gambling within the country.

If you are a player in Germany who wants to play at new German online casinos, then your situation is (un)clear – online gambling in Germany is illegal. You are still very unlikely to face any legal sanctions if you play slots and casino games online.

How We Select the Best New German Online Casino

If you were to hop into your time machine and venture back a decade, you’d be hard-pressed to find any online casino that accepted any players from Germany. Things are a little different now, though, and several online casinos are happy to accept German players. So, how do we decide which are the best?

The main factors we consider are as follows:

  • The security that the site offers
  • Levels of customer support
  • The variety and standard of software that is available
  • The speed of the payouts
  • Any bonuses and promotions that are offered
  • Payments options available
  • Any VIP or loyalty program
  • Whether the website is available in German

Let’s now run through each of these factors to explain why we consider them important.

The Security That the Site Offers

Nevermore so has online security been so important. Criminals are really beginning to attack the online realm like never before, and more and more of our financial dealings, these days take place over the internet. You may feel you are safe when using your debit or credit card online, and in the majority of cases, you are. Still, even the biggest corporations can become a little lax about their online security much to the delight of talented hackers. Could there be any worse feeling than checking your bank account one day and finding that someone has cleared it out?

As you will be gambling with money at new German online casinos, you will need to attach some means of payment. If the online casino has poor security, then your sensitive financial information could be under threat.

One way to be assured that you will be okay is if the new German online casino you choose has top-tier licensing. To obtain a top-tier licence, a casino much prove that they are using high levels of encryption technology to prevent hackers from gaining access to potentially sensitive data,

Levels of Customer Support

The majority of people at new German online casinos have a comfortable experience, but occasionally, casino play can go amiss. Perhaps a game froze just as you were securing a big win, or a withdrawal you requested does not seem to be happening?

When the unfortunate happens, you will need help, and there is usually just one place where you can get it – the casino itself. By our reckoning, we feel any online casino should have multiple ways to get in touch with it, and the more channels of communication it has open, the better.

We prefer new German online casinos with telephone support, and live chat that’s operated 24/7 at a minimum. Office hours live support is acceptable, but we get a little nervous if a casino has an email address as a point of contact. Who knows if the email inbox is even monitored?

A casino must be communicative to meet our approval.

The Variety & Standard of the Software’s Available

There are countless hundreds of casino games now available for new German online casinos to choose from, and we feel the casinos that select the best titles for the site are the ones that you should be heading towards. We like NetEnt, Microgaming, Play’n GO, Red Tiger, Pragmatic Play, and Yggdrasil Gaming. If a new German casino has titles by these guys, those titles will likely meet with our approval.

We don’t like sites that flood their gaming rooms with dozens and dozens of slots. Around 90% of slots are very formulaic, and once you have played one of these slots, you have played them all! That 10% is important as you’ll find innovative features and entertaining gameplay. Sites that pick and choose the best slots only meet with our approval.

A selection of decent casino titles is important too – several versions of blackjack, roulette and casino poker, plus video poker and dice games such as craps and sic bo. An array of niche titles is important too – instant win games, scratch cards and maybe even virtual sports.

The Speed of the Payouts

While most new German online casinos are quick at taking your money, they are not so fast-paced when it comes to paying out. No matter what any online casino may say, once you have gone through the necessary validation procedures, a withdrawal should really take no longer to process than a deposit.

Therefore, we give our approval to online casinos that do not delay getting your money back to you when you request a withdrawal. We feel that withdrawals should take no longer than 24 hours to process and we even think that three days is pushing it. If a casino takes a week or even longer to deposit money back into your account, then we most certainly disapprove!

Any German Casino Bonuses & Promotions That Are on Offer

Bonuses and promotions are not what they used to be within the realm of new German casinos. In the ‘good old days’ it was possible to take a bonus, and if you were fortunate enough to win a little bit of cash, you would have the best percentage of it remaining once you had worked through your wagering conditions.

In the modern age, it is a lot tougher to get anything from a bonus. Wagering conditions are usually very tight and online casinos put further restrictions upon what you can get out of their promotions, such as tiny game contributions (such as just 1% for blackjack and roulette or even nothing at all) and withdrawal limits.

So, how does this contribute to our view of the best new German online casinos? In short, we prefer casinos that are upfront and honest about their promotional deals. If a casino brags about its ‘400% deposit bonus for €1,000’ deal but then hides in its T&Cs horrendous wagering expectations, wagering limits, tight deadlines and cash-out restrictions, then we are sure to sniff them out.

After all, if a new German casino is not honest and transparent about its bonus offers, do you really expect it to be honest and transparent with its players?

Payment Options Available

When it comes to the payment options that are typically available at new online German casinos, we certainly feel it’s the case that the more options available, the better.

The most common payment offered by any online casino is usually a debit card or a credit card (although there is currently a global movement to ban credit card payments to online gambling companies). If you play at a properly licensed online casino, then you will be able to use your debit or credit card there without fear of having your sensitive personal information stolen. Even so, many people prefer not to use their plastic when paying for anything online, just in case.

Happily, for most new German online casinos, there’s the option of using alternative payment solutions. The most popular are Skrill, Neteller and PayPal, although not all online casinos will accept eWallet payments. Other eWallet solutions are popular in Germany, such as Klarna, GiroPay, PayDirekt and Trustly, but not all online casinos will accept them again.

For total security, you can use a cryptocurrency, with of course Bitcoin being the most popular. This can be done with complete anonymity and safety, as you are sending money online directly without the intervention of a third-party payment services provider. Bitcoin transactions are also completely encrypted and impossible to crack.

If you are in Germany, you will want all your monetary transactions to be performed in Euros. Happily, the Euro is the third most popular currency used by online casinos, behind the US dollar and the GB pound.

Any VIP or Loyalty Program

You can quite easily enjoy your experience at any new online German casino without ever having to bother with a VIP or Loyalty Program. Still, if an online casino has one, it makes sense to make use of it as long as you do so appropriately.

Such programs work by giving you something a little extra for all the time you spend at the casino that offers them. As you deposit and wager, you typically earn points (the same as ‘comp points’ as often given out by real-world casinos) – for example, you could earn one comp point for every €10 you wager at a casino.

You may then be able to exchange your comp points (once you have amassed enough) for either bonus cash or – if you choose the right new German online casino – real money that you can spend at the casino or withdraw.

Such VIP schemes usually exist on tiers too. The more comp points you earn, the higher up the tiers you rise and the better the benefits. Each time you achieve a new tier, you should be given some thank you, such as free spins or bonus cashback. The only issue here is that you have to keep earning comp points at a similar rate to remain there once you have achieved a specific tier.

When we review any online casino, we check the VIP schemes offered and examine whether they are the real deal or designed to encourage you to spend more at the casino without gaining any real benefit.

Whether the Website is available in German

If you are born and bred in Germany, then no doubt you find it frustrating that the ‘language of the internet’ is English. Like all German people, your English is no doubt excellent, but it would be nice if an online casino you wish to play at has the option of using the site when it is written in German.

We, therefore, report back on casinos where German is a language option. By that, we mean where the site has been properly translated into German, and not where a translation plug-in has been used that renders the site into something that looks like German but really is not.

Final thoughts

Navigating your way through the online internet casino realm can be as difficult as navigating a massive spaceship through an asteroid field. Your trip will likely be bumpy, you’ll experience a few near misses and minor collisions, and if you are not looking where you are heading to it might end in total catastrophe.

You can prevent disasters during any trip by hiring an experienced navigator’s services, and that is where we come in. Allow us to take the wheel and to steer you successfully through the minefield of new German online casinos in a way that will cause you to experience a safe and pleasant journey. Guite reise!

New German Online Casinos FAQ

  • TLDR; Is online gambling in Germany legal or not?

That depends on where and when you are reading this! In some of the sixteen German states, online sports betting is legal, and in others, it is not. In most states, though online casino (and poker) is not at all legal.

However, at the start of 2020 (and before the COVID-19 pandemic) a new treaty on gambling proposed that online sports betting would be legalised, with the provision that – if successful – this legalisation would be expanded to online casino play and poker in the summer of 2022.

This legalisation only really affects online sportsbooks, casinos and poker rooms. From 2020 companies in Germany were allowed to apply for sports betting licences. From the summer of 2022, companies in Germany can apply for online casino and poker licences. Such licences must be obtained from the German licensing board, and not from third-party providers.

Such licences will come with restrictions, though. For example, companies with German licences must restrict their site users to a €1,000 deposit limit, while slots must have a €1 per spin limit, no autoplay feature and no progressive jackpots. It will be left up to each state as to whether to legalise online table games.

Little will change for online casino players in Germany, though. You will still be able to play at any online casino, but you will do so at your own risk. To gamble legally and without fear of sanctioning, you may wish to gamble at an online casino with a German licence, come the summer of 2022.

  • Why are the majority of games at New German casino's Slots?

Mainly because slots are the most popular game at online casinos in general, they are easy to play, and because there are so many of them, there’s a great deal of variety. Most casino players feel that slots are also very entertaining.

This mirrors real-world casinos, where there is usually a vast room full of slots that you have to navigate your way through before you find the gaming tables.

  • Can I use Klarna at a German Casino Online?

Klarna may be the second-most popular eWallet payment solution for German people (behind PayPal), but its adoption across the board at online casinos has not really happened. This is because people in Germany and Scandinavia only really use Klarna. The legal standing of online gambling to people in Germany remains grey, meaning that some online casinos do not want to be seen that they are ‘encouraging’ German people to do something technically illegal.

With the changes coming about regarding online gambling status in Germany, expect more online casinos to apply for German licences and more casinos to start offering Klarna as a payments option.

  • I am in Schleswig-Holstein – I can gamble online, surely?

You could and you still can – sort of. In 2012, Schleswig-Holstein legalised online gambling as long as it was regulated, but in 2018 they did an about-turn and fell in line with the rest of the country in banning it. However, as already explained, regulated online gambling will become legal again in the summer of 2022 across Germany’s entirety, all being well.

  • What’s a progressive jackpot?

A progressive jackpot is attached to a slot (or a selection of slots) where tiny contributions from the players themselves build the jackpot. It is only won when a scarce combination of winning symbols is achieved, meaning that with some progressive jackpot slots the eventual winning total can easily be well more than €1 million.

Unfortunately, when online gambling in Germany is legalised, progressive jackpot slots are likely to be banned. It is best if you do not play slots with progressive jackpots if you are resident in Germany as it may be difficult for you to explain why your bank account has suddenly swollen by €1 miillion+ if you are fortunate to win one.

  • What providers currently offer their games for the German online casino market?

Again, because of the greyness of the current German online gambling market, only a few providers will allow their games to be hosted on sites that are open to accepting German-based players. The most popular providers are OryxGaming, Kalamba Games, GamMat, Amatic Industries, Merkur and Yggdrasil Gaming. Of these, we consider Yggdrasil to be the best.

Expect more providers to permit their games to be used come the summer of 2022, for a reason already explained.
