Apple Pay Casinos

Apple Pay CasinosApple Pay is one of the most recent additions to the deposit options available at online casinos – so recent in fact that the number of online casinos and pokies sites that accept Apple Pay payments is still minimal. This is despite Apple Pay now being commonly accepted by retailers both in the real world and online.

If you want to play at Apple Pay online casinos, then there are a few things that you need to know first.

A Brief History of Apple Pay

Apple Pay is not a new phenomenon, having been first released in 2014. Tim Cook of Apple announced that it was Apple’s ambition to replace the ‘out-dated’ reliance on plastic cards, particularly as it was easy for debit cards and credit cards to be stolen or cloned, putting their owners’ financial livelihood at stake.

Initially only available in the USA, Apple Pay branched out overseas in 2015 when people in the UK were also allowed to use it. In 2016 China was moved into the Apple Pay market.

Retailers were slow to accept Apple Pay payments as they needed new tech in order to be able to do so. KFC was one of the first companies to declare that they would now accept Apply Pay payments.

Apple Pay became significantly more popular in 2018 when technology was introduced to iPhones that used the same ‘chip’ method as ‘chip and pin’ cards. This enabled card readers designed to read chip and pin cards to read and process Apple Pay payments.

Apple Pay – Pros and Cons

  • Only available to people with Apple devices

How to use Apple Pay at Online Casinos

First of all, of course, you will need an Apple-based device to use Apple Pay. The most common device that ApplePay is used on is the iPhone, but you can use it via any Apple device – Apple Watch, iPad, MacBook or Mac, for example.

All you need to do is download the Apple Pay app to the device you want to use. Once downloaded you will need to link a debit card or credit card to the app. When you pay via Apple Pay you actually pay via the card linked to your Apple Pay account. There is no money kept in your Apple Pay account – it is just a payment service.

You can pay at real-world retailers by presenting your device to a contactless card reader. Naturally, when it comes to online casinos, things work a little differently as you cannot present your iPhone to your laptop (for example) and hope it will work!

When you make a deposit, you will instead be asked for your Apple ID. If you are depositing a PC or laptop, then you will also need your Apple passcode. If you are making a deposit via an iPhone or iPad, you will probably be able to use your fingerprint to confirm the transaction.

Deposits are usually instantaneous. For many online casinos though, Apple Pay is only available for deposits. You will probably have to create a separate payments process if you want to make a withdrawal.

It is likely to take a few years more, but plastic cards are likely to be replaced by apps like Apple Pay eventually, and Google Pay of course for Android users. The tech is already in place in the real world and apps are much more secure than cards as if someone steals your iPhone they cannot use your Apple Pay app unless they know your passcode or can mimic your fingerprint!

As this ‘takeover’ gathers place, you will find that more and more online casinos will begin to accept Apple Pay and will also find ways of making withdrawals to Apple Pay accounts. The future certainly looks fruitful for Apple Pay and Apple Pay online casinos!

Apple Pay FAQ

  • Is Apple Pay compatible with all models of iPhones and iPads?

That would be a no. For an iPhone, it will need to be an iPhone 6 or later in order to work. If an iPad, and iPad Mini 3 and for Macs and MacBooks they need to be models no older than those issued before 2013. You can use Apple Pay at online casinos as long as you have an Apple id and any Apple device capable of hosting the Apple Pay app.

  • Is Apple Pay available on other devices such as Samsung Galaxy phones?

Not at all. You 100% will need an Apple-based device in order to use Apple Pay.

  • Do deposits via Apple Pay incur fees?

They should not do. Apple Pay is a completely free service. If you are using an online casino that allows Apple Pay payments but charges a fee for them then you should look for a different casino.

  • Why can’t I withdraw via Apple Pay?

Because Apple Pay is a payments facilitator, it moves money from your connected debit or credit card to the retailer. To make a withdrawal, the retailer would have to have an Apple Pay account, and you would have to have been a retailer – in short, the online casino cannot make payments to you.

  • Can I claim a bonus by using Apple Pay as my deposit method?

Yes, you should be able to but you will need to check the T&Cs associated with the bonus offer as some offers will prevent you from claiming a bonus if you use a certain payment method. These restrictions only usually apply to eWallets such as Skrill and Neteller. As Apple Pay is a payment service and not an eWallet you should find no restrictions, but it is always best to check.
