How to Win at Roulette: 6 Tips to Help Beat the Odds

Did you know that roulette’s called The Devil’s Game? It’s supposedly nicknamed as such since all the numbers added up to 666, which was the number of the beast in the Bible.
Perhaps this isn’t enough to scare you off of trying a few rounds. Surely, it’s an easy enough game to play. Just place a bet and watch it spin!
But here’s a secret: the house always wins. However, there are strategies you can use to give yourself some better chances at winning.
If you want to learn how to win at roulette, then keep reading. We’ll give you 7 tips to beat the odds!
1. Play for Free First
The first and most important tip we have for you on this list is to play for free first! When you have no clue what you’re doing in the beginning, this can be quite costly.
When you’re trying to figure out exactly how roulette works and what strategies seem to work for you, you don’t want to be risking your real bankroll while you’re doing so. Instead, familiarize yourself with the game by playing a free version first.
A great thing about playing online is there are plenty of free roulette games floating out there. Find one, get to spinning, and figure out what exactly garners you big wins and what doesn’t.
When you’ve found a free roulette game to practice on, then you can try out some of our tips below, as well as some more complicated strategies if you’re brave enough.
2. Make Outside Bets
There are 2 types of bets: inside and outside bets.
Inside bets are where you bet on a specific number. As you can guess, these are incredibly tough to win, but when you do, you get a huge payout. For example, if you bet $1 on the number 4 and the ball lands on that number’s pocket, you’ll get $35 since the odds are 35:1.
On the other hand, outside bets are much lower ones, since you put money on the spin being even or odd and/or red or black. Because these are much easier to win, the odds are lower; they’re 2:1 and 1:1, respectively.
Other outside bets include high/low (1:1), dozens (2:1), and columns (2:1). High/low is betting on whether the ball will land on 1-18 or 19-36, dozens are where you bet on if the ball will land on 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36, and columns are where you bet on which of the 3 columns on the betting table the ball will land on.
When you stick to making outside bets, your winnings are small, but they’ll be steadier than inside bets. If you play it smart, you can keep upping your winnings until they’re of a respectable size.
3. Play the European Versions
You may have noticed when playing the free versions, but there are different versions of roulette out there: European, French, and American. If you can, avoid playing the American version and play on the European or French versions instead.
This is because, in the American version, there’s a 00, while the European and French versions only have a single 0 space. With a simple addition of 1 more space on the roulette wheel, American roulette actually puts you at a huge disadvantage.
Basically, the fewer spaces there are, the higher the chances of you winning; this means the house has a lower advantage. The American version has 38 spaces (00-36) and the European and French ones have 37 spaces (0-36).
Do note that many online casinos that have American roulette take off the 00 space, so be on the lookout for those if you particularly want to play American roulette but want better odds.
4. Take Advantage of La Partage and En Prison
You won’t find these two features on American roulette wheels, so the American version loses out again.
La Partage is when you get half your wager back if the ball lands on 0 and you had bet on red or black. While this isn’t technically maximizing on winning, at least you’re not losing your entire wager.
En Prison also gives you the chance to get back some money. Here, if the ball lands on 0 and you bet on red or black, the house keeps your money.
However, the house spins the wheel again. If it lands on red or black (whichever one you originally bet on), you get your wager back. If not, then the house keeps it.
5. Don’t Wager Your Winnings
A great way to maximize your winnings is not to wager them.
What do we mean by this?
Let’s say you start with $100. You play around and win $50; you now have $150.
Instead of thinking you have $150 to play with, consider it just $100 and “cash-out” that extra $50 in your head. It’s a great way to save your winnings and not touch them.
In the end, when you eventually run out of your initial $100, you’ll have a nice pot of winnings waiting for you.
6. Know Your Limits; Don’t Chase Losses
At the end of the day, roulette is basically a game based on luck. You can bet smart, but the fact is, that ball will land in a random pocket every single time the wheel spins.
When you’re caught up in the excitement of gambling, it can be hard to tear yourself away. This is especially true when you’re playing on an online casino where you don’t even have to leave the house to start placing wagers.
Before you start a session, give yourself either wagering or winning limit. Once you start, stick to it. No matter what happens, don’t go over your limit.
Remember: the house always wins, so even if you chase your losses hard, you’ll never recoup them. Instead, you’ll end up with heavy losses.
